You Was a Lamb?

They had a few things in their favor. The first was that a very aged Donse Master was tracking the blade’s movements. Even with atlen-drawn carriages and PiTorro’s armsmen clearing the way, they could only move so quickly and for so long.

Fallo told Wen that the man was easily tired out, especially when focusing his powers. He wasn’t noted to be a particularly strong in the mercus. But none of the thieving crew truly knew what that meant.

The next thing in their favor was Kila’s devious mind. Her big insight was to hide the blade within a greathouse where PiTorro would not dare to send his men uninvited. Of course, the person who owned such an estate would think PiTorro mad for even suggesting that his prized dagger had found its way into their greathouse, so they would not admit his Donse Master for a search.

It had been Fallo, of course, who had suggested stashing the blade in a Radiant’s greathouse. The lad had gone quickly from calling them all Kil-kissin’ simpletons to reveling in his father’s misfortune. “The man tried to kill me. This is the least of what he deserves.”

The final advantage was the cats. Just as they’d help coordinate the thievery that morning, the communication they allowed would be essential for the caper to come.

But first they had to get the blade into a Radiant’s greathouse, preferably one who already detested Tarek PiTorro. Fallo had several names in mind. Henley chimed in with several more. Radiant Gilok was first on Fallo’s list, but that house was nearly to the Citadel. Much too far of a trek, with too many Watch patrols to avoid. They needed someone further downslope, closer to the Baths of Ori.

Ultimately they decided on the Radiant Hiolly greathouse after Henley reminded Fallo that their daughter, Elise, had recently been found murdered in Radiant Gilok’s hedge maze. A very sordid affair, which had completely eluded Kila’s ears, for this was the first she was hearing of it. The aging Radiant Hiolly and his wife had no other children and were far past the age to have another. This meant many, many, many people were pressing suits to be first in line to inherit the title once the old couple had died. First among these was none other than Tarek PiTorro. The Radiant Hiolly knew this, of course, so he had a special animosity toward PiTorro.

Henley and Fallo met up with Kila atop the Yin Inn and together they worked their way upslope for a while. They merely needed to keep the blade moving around the city for now. Wen had taken a double dose of Finta’s tincture, and his cough had receded, allowing him to lurk on the roofway and monitor the slow progress of Dunne Postin’s carriage. It rolled along quite slowly, so the constant moving of the blade must have confused the man’s sense of where it was.

Kila did not intend to plant the blade in the Hiolly’s greathouse until
